Fans of Worth1000.com, the image manipulation contest website, will love this entertaining alternative where users can showcase their Photoshop skills.
Photoshopcontest.com (http://photoshopcontest.com) began in late 2001 in a cubicle farm near Pittsburgh in the US. A few web developers got together to produce a new site dedicated to the joys of digital image manipulation.
PSC was intially inspired by Fark.com's often hilarious Photoshop competitions. The PSC site has grown in the last five years adding many new members in the process.
Competitions are regular and varied, and once you've signed up you can download the original image to start manipulating.
The standard is high, but you needn't worry if your Photoshop skills aren't up to scratch - all are welcome. Winners are determined by fellow users' votes and the more competitions you enter the more chances you have of winning.
However, you can have almost as much fun simply taking part. You can view contest image galleries and study individual users' profiles - great if you find someone whose work you really love. Many members have links to their own sites or MySpace accounts.
PSC recently had a major makeover, adding extra features and functionality proposed by members. New features include a more user-friendly intuitive layout and the ability to upload bigger files. You can now select your favourite images as you browse contests and are also able to edit the display order. As an extra incentive, prizes are regularly awarded, donated by sponsors alongside the usual peer group fame. For a modest $24.95 a year you can upgrade to the PSC Advantage system, offering the ability to view and post entries to contests up to one week befroe they even start, and lose the annoying Google ads.
PSC includes a newly revamped forum where you can discuss contests and entries and just about everything. There are also some excellent user-written and illustrated tutorials to try. As Photoshop TV's Matt Kloskowski recently said: "It's a pretty cool site and everyone should go check it out."
