In any contest there are unsatisfied participants. I think they choose the winning image because it makes one wonder where are the five sources. I think it is a wonderful image especially when you think that the contest is held by a stock photo company.

I personnally wanted to evaluate my skills next to other graphic designers. I also like challenges, they push me to learn more.

Crowned - yours is a really beautiful image. Congratulations for your 8th place. I agree with previous comments - I would have given you top place for your image. I love the playfulness and delicacy, the scale changes, the earthy colors, the surprises.
