I think he may be talking about those ranking bars that show up under people's avatars depending on how many posts, etc, that they have. I may be wrong, but that's what it sounded like he was talking about to me. like these, for example:

custom title: see procyon messages, right under his name and above his avatar it says "site admin", that's a custom title

custom title would be something like:
1-50 posts "psc newbie"
51-99 posts "not as newbie-ish"
etc.
the titles can be anything

Maybe, you could have tiers of custom titles that unlock according to whatever qualifications and the user can pick his/her favorite from among them? I've seen lots of cute ones on other sites... my mind is a blur right now, but if I think of any more serious (or tongue-in-cheek) ones, I'll add them to my list.

ok IMHO custum titles are dividers not uniters.
and second, honest, not to be mean at all, I can't have people I know in real life coming in here and seeing puke smileys.
just like users, the site itself has a personality....
ours has always been that it is clean and navigable, and let the users define what silliness there is.
Smileys like the penguin and duck make sense cause they refer to inside psc jokes...
I introduce people to PSc on a regular basis, they understand if there are users they dont mesh with, but the smileys are part of the actual interface of psc, I can't explain that to people,
I go pointing people to psc provided puking smiley forums and they're ....I can't do it.
