Does anybody know how to customize the look of a dropdown menu on a web page (html select tag)?
Id like to put a custom graphic instead of the default "OS-like" but just cant find a way of doing it...

Ive found some scripts that should do it for checkboxes and radio buttons but cant find anything for a dropdown menu.

If an alternative way of creating it (without the select tag) exists it id like to hear about it too, but just keep in mind i dont want it to be made in flash

Please help Confused

Here is an example of what im looking for, something like a drop down menu from facebook:

Lucian, the guy at
http://www.badboy.ro/articles/2007-01-30/niceforms/ uses some javascript to do it. You are free to use his script and customize it, as long as you give him some credit.

Ah and you may find this one usefull, doesnt use select tag: http://www.cssdrive.com/index.php/examples/exampleitem/css_drop_down_menu/
If you are not planning on using a form, but just want a dropdown menu, this one should be a better choice for it's less code.

Are you sure you need to use a select? Is this a navigation menu? If so then you can use CSS and unordered lists. There's a TON of examples out there for CSS-based menus.

Thanks for this link.

That site was really helpful. I used stuff from it to make this site:

No, it isnt a navigation menu.
The exact thing that i have is a menu for selecting a region and then the rest of the page updates with some links from the database specificly for that region.
My friend is doing all the programming and he said to use select, but i guess it can be anything (except flash)

The select tag would allow you to capture the value from the list where you'd have to work-around with scripting to use a UL list menu (i.e. capture the LI value onClick and then store it). I think the method used would depend on the work-flow of how you are capturing and using the data.

I remember seeing a link for CSS-styled form menus. Something like "pretty forms" or something. It was a method of hiding the actual form elements and using CSS/Images to recreate the form in any theme that you wanted. If I find it again I'll pass it on as it sounds like it might be what you want to do.

yup. I freakin' love that site. I can't code anything from scratch other than HTML, but I can edit the stuff when I see it, so I've made some pretty kickass hybrid stuff using scripts and such from there.
