Chungking Express (Kar Wai Wong) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYS9Cj96C3U&feature=related I'm a huge fan of his works...most of em, anyway. This is close second behind
In The Mood For Love Very elegant film. Great score too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlXX9gVB7ak

Yes! I love it! I bought those 2 DVDs... the kind of movies to look at once per year.
I also saw 2046. Another great film. Did you see it?
The film is the third chapter of a story that began with "Days of Being Wild" and continued with
"In the Mood for Love". 2046 is the number of the hotel room in In the Mood for Love.
Some science fiction elements in that movie...

Du levande (You, the Living) by the great Swedish film director Roy Andersson.
It's a real masterpiece. Smart, funny, very artistic...
I prefer to give you some links to give you a clear description from the official site,
and some extracts from YouTube.

I still can't find the dvd on internet... maybe soon... Confused

That looks Great!!!
I wish I woulda known of it earlier, cause it came to a film festival near where I live , earlier this year. I'll definitely be look'n for that on DVD.....hopefully this year sometime for that release.....probably next year, tho I suppose.....US release anyway.

From what I've seen of the clips, it looks to have a very unconventional style. Are all the scenes filmed with a "static" camera?

"You, the Living" was released last year. I think it is still playing somewhere on our planet! So, I think we'll find the DVD soon. I just discovered his work recently... I will buy another one he made (Songs From the Second Floor)... I heard very good critics.
Yes, we can call it unconventional, I love it! Very Happy
Yes, most of the scenes are "static"... imo Andersson's artistic talents are enough close to a great painter, bringing such fascinating & so rich scenes in a so simple way, we can't compare his talent to any other filmmaker .
He made only 4 feature-length film since 1970. Shocked

Oh cool thread claf! Very Happy

There are just too many cool movies so for now I won't mention the obvious big titles but the bit lesser known, but very gooood!

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet made a couple of Gem movies, they are in French but are visually SUPERB Wink I say check m out:

City of the lost Children:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=CNYG9cXTSds

Delicatessen:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=iYo_SkERMNI&feature=related

Amelie:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=sECzJY07oK4&feature=related

You're right! Jean-Pierre Jeunet made fantastic movies!

Amélie, I mean "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain", was such a HUGE success in France & Québec. To the point that her hair style was getting very popular here... Laughing

Delicatessen is just great!! I have to see it again... or buy it!

I rented "City of the Lost Children" and I never saw it completely... the DVD was scratched! Evil or Very Mad
But what I saw was amazing. I have to rent it again...

Yes!...and I think I can go as far as to say that Amélie is one of the best films ever made. Very Happy and Audrey Tautou is one of the most beautiful women, ever and of course a great/very convincing actress.
Some might disagree ,but I even think that "Alien Resurrection" is really pretty good...mostly because of the "direction"....kindof off the beat'n track for Jeunet. I also like that he used Dominique Pinon and Ron Perlman again.... great actors .

also "A Very Long Engagement" (Tautou) I like quite a bit.

Yes Very Happy I have "2046"....watched it many a time.....maby not quite as affecting as "In The Mood..."( of which I will never tire of) but great nonethless....and Ziyi Zhang..well, what can you say Shocked
Tony Leung......great actor!!

also "Fallen Angels" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4CKAaU8EZE&feature=related is another of my favorites......similar to "Chungking...) pretty much it's companion piece.

and I just saw "My Blueberry Nights" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eE3uz_me4M&feature=related ...(WKW's first English language film...I believe) not as good as earlier films but of course his style is all over it ....voyeuristic.....a good watch.

If you like Memento, you should watch Irréversible (2002)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/

Though it's not for the faint of heart as it is pretty damn disturbing.

Cool, bsoholic! Thanks. I'll definitively look for it.

Another of my faves is Donnie Darko (2001).

didn't know they made a movie out of it...

the story is very weird, like anything by Keret... i'll definatly have to watch that one
