So... now it seems to be all over, how is the rest of the world supposed to interpret this result?

Is it a swing further to the right by the American electorate? After all, the highest turnout for 30+ years, and now not only the Presidency but also the Senate AND House have Republican majorities.

And what exactly swung it for Bush? Rumours are beginning to suggest it was his position on moral issues (abortion, homosexuality, stem cell research, etc), not Iraq/foreign policy or even economic policy that made a difference for him.

Also, given how close the result was, does this mean America is more polarised internally? Could this lead to a rupture between governance and the people?

I suspect that a certain number of voters supported Kerry, but when they got inside the voting booth, they suddenly got scared. Could there be any truth to this?

So... now it seems to be all over, how is the rest of the world supposed to interpret this result?

”Is it a swing further to the right by the American electorate? After all, the highest turnout for 30+ years, and now not only the Presidency but also the Senate AND House have Republican majorities.”

As I’ve said before the majority of people in this county are more conservative minded on most issues. Truth be told the average voters tend to stay away from anyone on the extreme end of either site. But they are definitely to the right of the middle.

”And what exactly swung it for Bush? Rumours are beginning to suggest it was his position on moral issues (abortion, homosexuality, stem cell research, etc), not Iraq/foreign policy or even economic policy that made a difference for him.

This may have quite a bit of truth to it. People in this country are tired of being told that their values, beliefs and traditions are wrong. Im an agnostic but I recognize the fact that freedom of religion means the right to practice your beliefs and that separation of church and state does not mean remove all references to god.

”Also, given how close the result was, does this mean America is more polarised internally? Could this lead to a rupture between governance and the people?”

I doubt it.. What it means was nether of the candidates were overwhelmingly popular outside their base supporters.

”I suspect that a certain number of voters supported Kerry, but when they got inside the voting booth, they suddenly got scared. Could there be any truth to this?

Nothing personal dude but that is typical liberal horse sh*t. “”Oh no I cant believe that people don’t agree with me, it can’t be true. They must of tripped on the way to the booth and accidentally voted for the wrong guy. If fact I’ll bet that loose floor board was put there on purpose by the rich republican who built the place.””
now please go for unity

lol chrispis - do you mean in the USA, or on here? Wink

Hey, better we thrash out our political views on places like this message board and maybe even correct some mutual misunderstandings, than that we bottle up our thoughts and end up slugging it out on the streets..
