Well, I was hoping that Japan, being the technological behemoth that is is, would have had some pretty innovative countermeasures built into their nuclear power plants for situations like this, since they are all too aware of the dangers that face their island nation, but it appears that this is going to be an epic disaster...

I don't think this is the biggest problem. The tsunami is the big thing. Today, they talk about a chemical explosion, not a nuclear explosion. I thought it was a nuclear explosion... for now it looks not too good but can be worse. They said we can't compare it to something like Tchernobyl disaster and they don't think it can go that bad.
BTW the 2 nuclear bombs in the past has nothing in common with what is going on here.

The other nuclear power plants worked well. Generally their technology functioned well. But sad to see what's going on at Fukushima. We'll see...

This is more proof that the old nuclear power plant is unsafe and "all" these plants need to be removed or upgraded, we have alternate safe energy systems that work today, but they are still being suppressed by either lack of funding, or by ridicule.. (LENR aka cold fusion) but the good news is that they will not be stopped, energy independence is something I myself have been working on for years, I know for a fact that cars should be getting over 100 MPG, if a stupid ass like me can build an engine that runs on just the vapors of gas, and these big car companies don't/won't, that tells me something else is going on, I have also figured out how to harness forces of nature like gravity to run huge machines, unfortunately it takes a lot of $$$ to make these things happen, the sad thing with nuclear power is that when it was developed, they figured out how to do it safely, but they wanted to make weapons to kill people so they do it that way even to this day, one dust size particle of plutonium inhaled will kill you, and these fucking assholes have covered the earth with it.

I am following the big debate on Nuclear Power they are having on the German television tonight. In Germany the government allowed the old reactors to be modified (if that is the word) so they can "live" longer.
There have been many demonstrations against that in the past, but now the people are demonstrating again, with renewed vigor, to get the nuclear idea of energy off the table alltogether.

Not sure what the French position will be about it, not much in the news about that, but I heard that the French Nuclear plants have many problems of their own, that are swept under the carpet to this day.

In my country there is one old plant - the new one that was planned got iced long time ago. That building site is now a theme park and sports center.
But, we are in the "middle" of all the other power plants and I know for sure that the Electricity Board in my country is buying the N.generated energy from Germany (it is cheaper).

What the people in the German television said this evening about the problems in Japan was rather sobering. The biggest expert on the subject said that the 20 kilometer radius in which people were evacuated is by far not enough to keep people safe anymore. And the iodine pills were handed out, he said, to the people from the areas near the powerplant in Japan.
So, radiation was leaking, at least before the explosion.

And the fact that they were talking about pumping seawater into the plant directly also indicates they are a little desperate. Normally the seawater is mixed with another substance first before it is used as a cool aid, to prevent water from becomming steam and adding to the problems.

No amount of technology or building seems to be prepaired for this horrific type of earthquake that happened this week. And the powerplants weak spot is the water inlet and outlet system on the bottom of the ocean. The same bottom that was going crazy....

I am sure they will work it out, what to do with this horror scenario. And I am sure they will find all the things from it, that can be done to the many other powerplants in the region too, to make those even more safe then they are today.

If there is one thing you can say, then that will be that the people in Japan leave nor have left anything unthought of, or to chance.

I just measured on Google Earth the distance between my sister-in-law home and the problematic Fukushima nuclear station... only 100 km (60 miles) !!! I didn't know they were so close!

But on positive side... I think in Japan there's the more advanced specialists and well organized people working hard there for this kind of catastrophe. Maybe they need concrete help from foreign countries, and for diplomatic motivations, but I don't think they really need advices from them. They are extremely organized and efficient.

I read this earthquake was 900 times more powerful than the one in Haïti last year. Of course the epicentre was in the ocean and not so close to Tokyo (375 km - 230 miles), but I think it is amazing to hear that there was only 5 deaths related to this earthquake in a big city and suburbs of 35 million of population. I heard the road infrastructures are mostly in good shape in the whole country... some minor damages. Considering the power of this huge earthquake, the disaster was supposed to be incredibly more important if they were not so well prepared and if this country wasn't so well developed & built.
But I think there's a limit of what human can do against the power of nature. The Fukushima nuclear power station problem is a good example. This powerplant was damaged. But I think they are doing well.
