I just found that Flash has a "Trace Bitmap" function that will create vector art from any bitmap (.jpg, .bmp, .pict, etc.).
This is my nephew Grant after using the tool. Below is a closeup to show that it's actually made with vectors.

Oh. And I only post that because it makes me wonder how many people "cheat" on sites like vexels, pixelpeeps, etc.

vector art?
It's not finished and might never be, but I've made this one with Flash5.
Right click and zoom in for full details.
It's based on a Solar cover by BWS

ok i just thought ill give my opinion on autotracing (i believe thats what its called). its clever, saves you time etc. when doing this kind of thing but as reinman says, it looks blotchy. it all depends on what your using the illustration for- as a piece of artwork, part of a design, etc. as to whether or not you should use the trace bitmap thang.
the reason why you shouldn't use it for artwork is as follows:
different mediums boast different qualities. 2 examples (the two main ones for digital art) are photoshop and illustrator. in my opinion its quite hard to get out of the mindset for either if your used to the program because they are used for entirely different things. in photoshop, the emphasis is on photorealism, and sacrificing ( uhh ) abstract-ness, but in illustrator its the other way around. also, in photoshop its generally better the more complicated the piece is, and how many shades of whatever colour etc. etc. where as in vector work, the more simple the piece is the better the outcome and generally, if i do abstract artistic stuff i use a simple colour scheme with only 1 colour in it and not many shades. this extra definition and clarity, pushes users to use more artistic abstract styles to get thier point across. well thats my opinion anyway.
you shouldn't use auto tracing for art because the emphasis on that tool is toward high definition, highly detailed, complex pieces, which takes the beauty out of the medium.
