yeh... Early CMOS sensors were shit.
Now the best quality CMOS sensors are excellent.
Generally speaking..CCD's are better than CMOS... but the Canon SLR's use other types of image processing to reduce noise and improve quality.
I still recommoned you at least have a look at the Pentax K100D... here's a review
