QUOTE from http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/000305.html

There is a linguistic point here on which I'm willing to be entirely prescriptive: people who think that a marriage ceremony involves the exchange of vowels are making a mistake. (Well, vowels are part of their ritual statements, but you know what I mean.) There are many dialects of English that fully vocalize syllable-final /l/, turning it into a high back off-glide, and for speakers of these dialects, vows and vowels have merged phonologically. They've become homophones. However, that doesn't make "wedding vowels" a legitimate variant. For /l/-vocalizers, the distinction between vows and vowels is like the distinction between beats and beets -- an arbitrary convention of spelling that they need to learn. Even if /l/-vocalizing became as widespread as the merger of hoarse and horse is -- and that may be where things are headed -- this wouldn't change. I don't make any distinction in pronunciation between hoarse and horse, but if I write about "riding a hoarse", I'm making a joke or a mistake.

Shocked

Ooh! Grammar pet peeves! My favorite. Should I be shopping right now? Yes. Am I going to? In a minute. So, grammar pet peeves! There are too many written ones, I'm going to concentrate on spoken ones right now...

1. People who use the word "guesstimate"
2. People who say "multiple of times," as in, I've asked you multiple of times to shut up.
3. Any qualifier before the word "unique." Something is unique, or it isn't. So "kind of unique" "pretty unique" and so forth are wrong. It's like saying you're "kind of pregnant."
4. Saying, "I could care less," because it means the opposite of what you're trying to say.

Okay that's enough for now. My husband has gone off to Engerland for a couple of weeks, which means I have to drag myself away from the keyboard--ha! Plus that stupid subway strike is on, so why bother going anywhere?

I've never been apart from the husband at Christmas since we met...not quite sure how to cheer myself up and regain the holiday spirit, since I actually kind of like the guy. Plus Bella is so freaked out that she crapped all over the floor at 3 in the morning...she's never had an accident since we adopted her, so I think it was more of a rebellion thing. Then she spent the rest of the night smelling James' pillow and whining.

I'm never getting through the next two weeks. Sad

[quote="Queen La Tiff"]

1. People who use the word "guesstimate" - yes, annoying

2. People who say "multiple of times," should be "multiple times," you fools!

4. Saying, "I could care less," should be "I couldn't care less" you fools!

Yes, the people that say the above incorrectly need to learn proper English!

Actually, 1016 is right! (it was the number of posts I had at the time.) What are the chances fempie will get the colour right? I mean, what are the odds of picking the right number between 1 and 10 000? 1 in 3? Confused
