cafn8d wrote: Hi, all! I know this sounds silly, but Mr. Caf and I don't quite agree on how to spell our new daughter's nickname. We decided to seek out a consensus. It would be nice if our daughter didn't have to constantly correct people her entire life. Anyway, her name is Evelyn. Her nickname, what we've been calling her, is pronounced starting with a short e (like Evelyn) rather than a long e (like our dear friend Eve). Mr. Caf spells it "Evie." I had been spelling it "Evvy," but could also do "Evvie." What are your opinions on these three spellings? Thanks!

I am the father of a 19 year old daughter. We have many many names for her. I vote Evvy. It's sort of unique and easy to say. Once again, congrats to the Caf family. WTG.

My first name is Johann, but my parents always called me by nickname "Hannes". I was 12 years old already when I recognized, that my real name is not Hannes but Johann. Was kind of shocking for me So be careful with nicknames!

Definitely Evie.
Sometimes two V's looks like a W.
That can look like Ewie or Ewy, which some punk somewhere is going to pronounce "Ew-ee" (as in Yuck!) if she writes it like that.

Okay, so the consensus seems to be for E-V-I-E for the spelling, yet most of you seem to pronounce it with the long e (like Eve) instead of the short e (like egg)... We pronounce it with the short e. Would this spelling cause confusion? And yes, we fully expect our little girl to voice her OWN opinion on what her nickname, if any would be as she gets older. Rumor is, it may even be "Splodge"!

How should we spell EveNlyn's nickname?
no... seriously... I like Evie better... Mr. Caf 1 x 0 Mrs. not-pregn8ed-anymore
Har! Darn typo... See what lack of sleep can do to a person... who's not used to it?
I can't seem to edit the poll question, though... only the post itself comes up when I click "edit." Glad most of you knew what I meant anyway. hehehehe
Edit: Thanks, Beet!!

I think it should be spelled Evvy because the Evie makes it a hard E. Like Eve-E. heh, like Eazy-E.

Definitely EVIE...
Or Nellie...
Evvy/Evvie sound too much like bevvy or heavy...could be cruel...
I think Evie or even Eve has a nice emphasis on the first E...(pronounced 'ee') in the English language anyway!

I'm definately in the Evvy crowd... if you really really want people to say the soft "e" sound, the two v's mostly force that to happen. Evie in my mind will always be "EEEEEEEveee", which is very close to EEEEEEEEvil and I'm sure your daughter is not THAT evil (at least not YET ).
It is true, some people with nasty visual impairment might see the two v's as a single "w" but those people should really really get better glasses or DRINK MORE BEER, DAMMIT!
In the end, she'll prolly end up with a moniker like "sparky" or "ZoomGirl" or "Bean"... you have no control. Surrender. Just remember to call her to meals.
