I understand all the other voting selections, but what does 'theme' mean - is it a vote for something that reflects the theme of the original source image, or something that shows a consistent theme in its rendering (as opposed to an Idea) ??

For me theme can be a very unique style. Like micose or reggienoble2. Or a very abstract image. Or patterns. And it could just as well change name from theme to style.

theme can mean whatever you think it means, or however you interpreted what the author meant.

simple as that.

To me the theme is the story told in the chop. This is different from idea where the chop is a good idea for a chop but doesn't tell a story.

Examples of idea vs. theme for the same contest:
Theme - http://photoshopcontest.com/view-entry/125761/votes.html
Idea - http://photoshopcontest.com/view-entry/125791/votes.html

Another contest:
Theme - http://photoshopcontest.com/view-entry/133858/votes.html
Idea - http://photoshopcontest.com/view-entry/134042/votes.html

YMMV Wink

Theme: 1. subject of discussion or composition: 2. distinct and unifying idea: Sometimes we have THEMED contest....like a underwater theme. So you take the source and create a underwater chop.

Style: 1. distinctive form: 2. way of doing something:. Micose, Reggie, they have styles. Micose can chop a underwater THEME using HIS STYLE of chopping.

Now that we've had our lessons...is it time for recess yet? That's the only part of school i miss. Smile

I'm not sure how to bring it under words, but see it this way.
Themes:
Love
War
Space
Underwater
Futuristic
Ancient
etc...

A good theme can also be a good idea.
Idea-votes I usually give to some out-of-the-box thinking photoshops.
Like someone makes a bended over naked butt form a lightbulb (not original anymore, I know)

Hope this helped.

I disagree....
It would be strange giving a chop a theme-vote if the contest is already themed. Might be it is diffrent in english than norwegian (my language).

But I do understand what you saying. Still it doesn't sit right for me when voting.
