I ran into a small problem in PS3 with Smart Objects and masks - unlike regular layers, masks applied to smart objects are not linked. When you move the smart object, the mask stays in place. You can move the mask later, but imagine working with many smart objects, masking them, and later trying to move things around.

A quick Google search later I found a workaround
http://www.ianhoar.com/2008/02/22/photoshop-tip-1-smart-objects-and-layer-masks/

Here's a quick visual demo:

1. Gradient circle converted to smart object, made a copy, mask applied to look like Pacman

2. If you want to move the Pacman closer the mask stays in place.

3. Make a new group, put the Pacman layer in the group, select and apply the mask to the group, delete mask from smart object

4. Move the group, mask stays linked

Cool Vokaris, good to know. It's strange though that the mask can be linked to the folder with the smart objects in them and not to the smart objects themselves,No?I haven't worked much with smart objects, usually just to upscale then change back to a layer.Does this work with CS2 as well?

Apparently they've "fixed" this problem in CS4. You can now link your layer masks to SMART OBJECTS directly. Now that is just SMART, doncha think? Smile

But good work-a-round Voks! (for those us us saving up our shekles for CS4 upgrade Wink )

Very cool find Vok.....Even cooler that you shared the knowledge. Bow

Seems like Adobe would have noticed the problem before the release of the CS3...wonder if CS4 gives you a way to do this without the WORK AROUND.

Please see my entry just above YOUR entry.

Yes. Yes they have. They have given you a way without the reach-a-round. Rejoice, my little dear dew². Cool

What ReinMan said. CS2 and CS3 problem only. I tried a different workaround - converting the masked smart object to a new smart object, but it didn't quite work: the mask now moves with the object, but the 'smartness' is broken.

Ooh no.......without the reach-around....PUT IT BACK....DAMMIT PUT IT BACK NOW...for the $699 bucks...or what ever they sell the CS4 for....I want the reach-around included. It's the least adobe could do after sticking to my wallet like that. Some sugar or Something is in order. Razz
