Just curious if anyone is willing to answer this question, and maybe shed some light for me.
"Will The Mechanic" today's contest source.
I'm wondering why people voted heavily for this image.
Personally I can't see what inspiration you may have seen in it.
I don't see any particulars of the image that lend themselves to specific types of manipulation.
There's no distinct shapes to take advantage of, colors, perspectives, objects...none of the things I look for are there.
Even the lighting on the person in the image is totally shot. There's flash on his face, and none on his dusty hand.
Simply put, to extract, or manipulate anything in this image to the point where it would be useful to create a finished manipulation from would be quite a bit of work.
I think the entries in this contest also show that those who did vote for this image obviously didn't end up using it.
So back to my question. Why did people vote for this image?

Usually I vote for the best of the offered 5 images. Many times none are any good so best of the worst. Which many have been around before and used for entry before maybe they need a lot of new stuff sent in.

Get clicking and send in some good stuff. Shocked Very Happy Very Happy

I find it's always more fun for me to manipulate an image of a person or character, as opposed to the standard source with plants, landscapes, branchs, tree stumps, lakes, etc.

It's fun to do, and generally speaking, I seem to notice that sources with people (or faces, statues, animals, etc) get voted for in 'sourceland' more often, and often get more entries when the comp opens.

Or maybe Will is just really hot to psc'ers?

It cant be lack of images, i've also uploaded alot of source images, so far one has made it through.
So no excuse for poor quality images.
Poor quality images do make it alot harder to come up with a good chop.

I never voted for that image, all the times it came up in the vote queue, my guess was that it finally got enough votes because it was in a group of 5 that all had been rejected too many times.

We were worn out to pick this image.

That is how I see it.

i say if an image gets rejected x times, delete it. Maybe more control of the source submissions to the mods would also help source quality.

honestly, i started chopping this one yesterday, had to give up.

cheers

Actually the selection system has been updated to do since a few weeks, unfortunately there was no data how many times a source has appeared before this update. (note that unpopular images (lack of votes) get thrown out faster then images that are getting lots of votes, but somehow didn't make it yet)

So the results of this update will slowly trickle in, but rest assured, it's taken care off Smile.

It's been up several times. Not as many times as 'reading chalo', but maybe it got the sympathy vote just to get it out of the voting queue.

Seriously, I was just thinking that.

Also I would like someone (I would volunteer!) to sift through all the backlog of photos and discard all the crap.

One other thing. it's seems that some people are submitting any old rubbish. Really mundane boring subjects. Some look like they've been taken with phone cameras. So many are badly exposed. (They could at least check the histogram and make sure there isnt half an inch of flatline on the right! A few are in focus on a field that isn't actually the subject.

I suspect it's all down to having the stats system in play. People sending in a veritable deluge of garbage in the vein hope that a few might get used one day.

Another thing that really grinds my gears. When you see that a certain image has been voted in by, say, 12 people, often beating a few GOOD images, and then you only get 7 or 8 preposts !!!

It is like voting for a president. Wow they all suck. but this one sucks less Question

Tomorrow is my 1 year anniversary here at PSC and I have seen many, many threads like this one.

People always gripe about the source pics so I say either on this thread or start a new one where people can post an example of a picture that they would like to see used as source.
Just an idea.
