I've used smart object before but I just made an image with lots of the same image except some are different sizes. So I select one to change its color, click Save. Only some of them change color. So I try selecting all my smart object layers, change color and still only some of them change.

Why???

Are they grouped?

As control over each smart object and the original are separate if made this way. To control more, they need managing as a whole. Sounds like some of yours are, while others are not Eve.

Just a guess though. As can't quite picture exactly what your are like.

All smart objects that are duplicates of the original should change along with the original. If you recreate the steps that created the original, that will not be linked with the original even if it contains exactly the same info. If a smart object is converted into another smart object, it wont change with its original. I'm sure there are other reasons, these are just the ones I learned the hard way.

So by changing the size of a duplicated smart object, it won't change?

I had a similar issues thinking about it. They do not have to be grouped as the term suggests, I can't for the life of me remember the process! Time to have a mess around Confused

Nope, only the changes you make when you click and open a smart object are reflected in its duplicates. Anything done directly to the smart object layer affects only that smart object.

first time i read a little about smart objects.
what i understood so far is, that you cannot change the color of a smart object (layer) - only the 'original' reference for this object. If you change that, then all the smart objects depending on this will change.

if you have layers which don't change, then it must be because you are not working on their source/reference, maybe due to wrong duplicating/grouping/saving/whatever. A direct change should anyway not work:

What You Can't Do
Unfortunately, a Smart Object doesn't share all the behaviors of a regular layer. Because it contains a reference to a set of image data, rather than normal pixel data, you can't use Photoshop's painting tools, filters, or anything else that would alter the Smart Object's pixel data.

but then again, maybe i got it all wrong.... scratch

sounds like maybe you made some of the smart objects as copies of a copy? That could be why only some change?

Smart objects are VERY Cool IF IF IF you use them SMARTLY! Razz Twisted Evil

As previously mentioned here, the COPIES of a smart object layer have the SAME "embedded" PSB (a version of a PSD) file in them. So, when you open up any of the copies or original SMART OBJECT and MUCK WITH THEM, all the layers that used that same "embedded" image will change accordingly. As you've noticed, just doing SOMETHING the Smart Object in its own surface layer does NOTHING to the other Smart Object layers.

ALSO: you CAN copy a Smart Object layer into an INDEPENDANT duplicate Smart object (which basically creates a new layer with a NEW COPIED "embedded" PSB that ISN'T connected any longer to the original file.

Here is ONE way to do it: click on the layer with your SMART OBJECT in it. Then RIGHT CLICK that layer. You'll get a pop-up menu and in there, about a third of the way down, you'll see "NEW SMART OBJECT VIA COPY"... hit that and you'll have a happy independant Smart Object.

Okay - I'm sorry, Ms. Eve - I suspect this doesn't help you much - but it might help others understand the Crazy World Of Smart Objects. reindeer
