Just made this wine glass from scratch in PS. I know the outer parts like the glass rim, stem, etc don't look right. That's the part I need help with. I used a glass layer style on those parts but I'm not happy with the results. Any (constructive) critiques/comments welcome.

Thanks,Vince Shocked Cool

Your on the right track. You did a pretty good job. I think the colors are off just a bit. check out this pic and notice the lighting and colors. Just try to match them more

Important question : is it meant to be an illustration style or photorealistic?

the first thing I notice is that it is not symmetrical, tilt it upright and you'll see what I mean. Wink

Wine level isn't horizontal.

Base is way too small.

Neither glass nor wine is transparent (try copying the flares and refracted images from a photo of a real glass of water/wine.)

Nice start though. Your edges can't be so firm or 2 sided more like a gradient effect maybe helps. Glass value set lower opacity and fill, it does need a base to stand on. Keep working on it. Let us see what you wind up with. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

glass is one of the most difficult things to illustrate! maybe start with something easier first, like fruit or something not transparent refracting light and creating all sorts of reflections.

I looked around my big folder of tuts for you JC. Found these 2 that might help you out and give you some ideas. I know the frustration of knowing what it should look like in my head, and not being able to duplicate it on the screen. The bottle tut is a advanced one. Should be able to pick up 4 or 5 other tech's from it.

If you're trying for the realistic then it seems your highlights are a bit too sharp as well.

Check out the glass here (I couldn't grab the image URL):

Edit: hit http://www.wineproductsunlimited.com/members/1348473/uploaded/afterglow_wine_glass.JPG and save the file. You'll get the reference glass then.

Here's another to look at:

I looked at your image and thought, that's quite a nice icon.

Then I read your post and looked back...

Yeah I wouldn't be happy with the results either if that was supposed to be a wine glass.

There is so much wrong with it I don't know where to start.

But I suppose I can give you a short tip on how to make that better for very minimal effort.

Take your PSD and get rid of the wine in the glass image, merge everything together, select all, copy and then undo back to before you merged and paste, make sure the layer is at the top and then do the following
First- Duplicate the new merged layer 4 times so there are five copies.

In order from top to bottom set the layer blending options as follows.
- Multiply
- Pin Light
- Difference
- Exclusion
- Normal

Then merge the top 4 layers together, select all, copy, undo until you get to the point before you merged the second time and then paste.
Make sure that the new layer is on top and set it to screen and then change the layer below it to linear burn..

Now at least your wine glass doesn't look so much like an icon.
I did that with your wine glass PSD.
Result here.
