It was my first painting. I loved it but received less votes. I am posting it here for some critiques

I am going to start with the summary:
Bad things:
- It's crap.
- It probably took you a while to do, but not long enough, because it isn't finished.
- You make some basic errors in highlighting.
- Your shadows are too bold.
- The contrast between the little and ring finger is too low, it makes the two fingers look joined together.
- The handcuff looks flat because of the shading.
- The Shadows don't cast properly on the handcuff

Good things:
- The base of the hand where it meets the wrist isn't too bad.

Points to consider, you might be blind?

If I had to guess I would suspect the smudge tool and an overlaid colour.

The thing it lacks the most is detail, as the picture stands, the hand is in what some people would call the 'foundation stages' of construction.

I must state that you raised the bar way to high for yourself to start with. Having a photographic background means that your work needs to be photo-real looking in order for it to match, otherwise it will look jarring and noticeable.

You would have needed to draw hair, skin blemishes, texture, specular highlights and detail shading to make it look more real. All of the above takes a lot of time. [Edit: Turns out it takes me about 20 minutes]

If it got to the point where you said, this looks like a hand, you would be correct, it looks sort of like a hand, if you got to the point where you thought it was passable as a hand, you might need to see an optician.

Photoshop blindness happens to a lot of people. Try flipping the image occasionally to get rid of it.

Boy Marx. You really know how to make friends. lol
It's not Crap. Laughing The basics are there he just needs to keep going.Brighten it up a bit at least on the back of the hand to match the lighting of the scene. Then start adding details. Texture of skin. small hairs, wrinkles etc. It should look sharp and in focus. Like the hand cuffs. If the rest of the image were painterly then a little soft would be ok.

In the time it took you to make believe you painted this, you could have painted this. Laughing
Are you really going to try and fool me??? I've been working in the industry for over 15 years now. Laughing I know what's real and not. Laughing I've worked for advertisers, pre-press companies and a laundry list of HUGE clients. So please, stop. Laughing By the way< the backing? Did you draw that with your foot? Laughing I'm gonna pee my pants. Laughing

But seriously though, that is how I paint.

My background layer is amazingly basic, because I work to a picture I have in my head and build it up...

I am painting a ring atm I will post the stages as a Gif, the reason the basic shape is THAT basic, is due to the whimsical nature of an idea, the more definite the lines are and the more focused I make the foundation the quicker I loose the big picture before I have even painted it.

The choice I make when putting the framework in is simple.

Strong framework and risk loosing the idea or interest.
Or loose framework and built it up using vision.

In the words of Darth Vader, I find your lack of faith disturbing.

I stopped half way through making the ring to take a break... and go to sleep.

When I wake up + can be bothered, I will be finishing it up.

I am recording my process as I go this time, just for you... Mr 'Over 15 years"
