So a while back someone said you need to learn how to use a printing press to do well in graphic design/Illustration.

I am 15 and wanted to know how I would go about learning to use a printing press aside from buying one or breaking into a printing store?

your 15? want to be a page? Laughing Shocked

actually, I myself don't know much about them, but I know a few peeps that do, I believe it's called an AB Dick, I'll do some research, that's a med, to small, old school press, you can do some really cool stuff on one of those, you could pick up a used one for a reasonable price I bet, from there they only get bigger, and a lot more technical, I'll get back to you on this later, hang on Smile

here you go FF, if you could get this for $300, I'd say do it Smile
These are 4 color I believe, if you can learn how to use this machine, you can do anything.

with 15 it should not be a problem for you, to get into any printing-company and get a sharp inview how it works. tell them you want to become a printer one day (you get my permission to lie), and I am sure, that most of the bosses are willing to invite you for an excursion. When you are addicted to graphics you will enjoy a visit at a press too. It is interesting, and you will find some clues when you are working with indesign or xpress, or even photoshop. check it out!

Foot.
I was the one who said learn how to run a press...
my answer
GO TO A GRAPHIC ARTS COLLEGE!
The one by me (TRITON) has many 5 color Heidelberg along with one color ABDicks to learn on.

yes you could get a job in a print shop, but they will start you with loading paper or on the finishing end of the press... I want you to get your hands dirty and learn what it takes to actually print what you've designed. If you take press in High School (like I did) thats a bonus, but not every High School has Graphic Arts classes available. Thus the reason for college, they will teach you everything about the press. Then when you go to get that graphic design job, you will have the experience most employers are looking for...

By the way you're 15?!?! Shocked you're awesome for your age my friend... That was the age I started working with Photoshop and Quark X-press! Keep up the great work!
