I just had a thought (yes it is a rare event for me). What about having a contest where all is given is the theme and the entrants must create their image entirely from their own sources (no common source pic).

Since this would, obviously, be tougher to do as well as to vote on entries the contest could be a monthly contest. Voting would take place the following month (i.e. all entries must be submitted before a deadline and voting starts after that deadline).

Advantage members could get an advance notice of the theme (maybe one to two weeks or even a month out?).

Themes would be simple phrases to describe the type of entries expected. For example:
    - Alien landscape
    - Archeological Find
    - Fantasy football (wouldn't that be fun)

Just a thought. Hopefully nobody else brought this up in the past and I just didn't find it whilst perusing the forums.

It was discussed a few years ago,... back then it didn't seem to be a good idea because 'the other site' (worthnotnearlya1000) is doing it the theme thing,... I think you should ask jmh about it.

Hey man, join a Scavanger hunt team and you'll have quite a lot of tasks without a given pic!

hmmm, I am on the fence with this. If anyone would like to push me in either direction, have at it.

I think there should be one Source pic that is given a month to work with... How amazing would the results be? The "one month" pic should be anonymous, like the old days, to eliminate favoritism (although there is none of that on this site) and give a larger posting image size possibly. Yes?

I like this idea too, but I am looking for arguments for or against a monthly/weekly theme contest?

I may be misssing something, but I can see no harm in creating a monthly themed contest.
If entries are submitted, same voting rules apply as with the daily contest. If no one enters, no one is hurt. If entries are submitted, then more fun for the viewers and submitters. There would probably need to be some contest rules to establish the basic criteria under which pictures would be submitted.
It would simply be another fun way to enjoy the PSC site. It would not be the defining characteristic of the site. That is already determined by the "daily contests".
In short, the possibility of another fun site experience combined with the "no harm" principle leads me to support the idea of creating the "themed" contest.
