I'm working on a cake chop. I have a box shape and I want to make it look like it's covered in fondant. Sample photos for those that don't know what fondant is:

Not being an artistic type I'm not sure how to recreate the look. Seems that gradients come into play. Tips? Suggestions?

I'd post what I'm doing but it's for an upcoming contest and I don't want to spoil the surprise. Wink

There is fondant in all colours/taste... it look a bit like felts, satin. Not much refection or glow, mat brilliance.

I would probably play with layers and VERY subtle and soft bevel/emboss sections.

Laughing fondue is the word you're looking for, Splodge. That's good, too.

I call it 'cake icing' or 'frosting'... Hmmm

see but icing and frosting are 'painted' on, whereas fondant is like a sheet where you lay it ontop of the cake. its useful where frosting or icing would rip the cake apart as you applied it

you also cant get these effects with frosting

check out http://www.aceofcakestv.com/

some interesting stuff for those who like cake Very Happy

thx FF Smile

so Tofu...in the first steps, those of the coloring, its quite easy to make multicolor (play with purity setting to find the right range of colors)brush then to smudge it...
the top layer uses bevel and transparency
of course the final layer of brushes that i use to write "Tofu" uses a deeper bevel.
i added a rainbow" gradient, very smooth one.
for shadowing this bevelled layers to keep the creamy looking, i dont use the black color but a blue one.
No need to use plastic ag filter except at the end ,isolating some parts if u think theres not enough relief. But FADE it a lot with overlay option.
