Did you guys hear about the awesome study B&J's is sponsoring? They're trying to use soundwaves to chill foods.
Here's the blurb from NPR:
Scientists have found a new way to refrigerate ice cream, by using sound waves instead of chemicals. The system, which can power a small ice-cream freezer case, is sponsored by Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, a company known for its efforts to protect the environment.
At the heart of the system is sound -- a 190-decibel note that fluctuates some 100 times per second. That expansion and compression creates pockets of cold and warm air. A system of air circulators then funnels the cool air into the ice cream case.
The new "green" freezer isn't likely to be seen in stores any time soon, because of its cost -- considerably more than conventional freezers that use chemicals. But its creators say their system works, and it uses cheap components to do work currently done by exotic -- and often dangerous -- chemicals.

Very COOOOOL! That is awesome. I'm sure once other companies pick up on something like that the cost of making them will go down. That's somewhere I wouldn't have thought going. I wonder if it makes it through what else it will affect? Air Conditioning and other chilly items.
Thanks for the post. This whole contest has turned into more than just a contest. We'll make it the Ben and Jerry's trivia center.

LOL... actually, it's not ready for market yet.... it's one hell of a loud thing! If I remember correctly, U Penn is doing the study. Cool, though, eh?

I got a packet in the mail today (despite the 15" of snow that's fallen over the weekend) and what did I see inside? A signed print of the B&J-mobile!
