May I suggest working out a contingency plan ahead of time for people who sign up after slot 64, in case we don't make it to 128 again this year? DB was generous and dedicated in setting up a mini-H2H last year, but he'll (hopefully) be busy with the official H2H this year.

My suggestion is to set up a pool of "standby" contestants (informing them, of course, that they were "standby" and not in the official brackets--maybe giving them a choice at that point whether to accept those conditions for H2H participation).

All official brackets and stand-by participants would work on their first-round images.

If any of the official (bracketed) contestants miss the deadline for entry, a "standby" entry can be substituted within just a few minutes after that deadline, but before any of the entries became visible for voting.

"Stand-by" entries could be chosen in the order in which they originally signed up for the H2H.

Perhaps unneeded standbys can then have a special, separate contest of the images they created for the first round. It would be set up more like a regular anonymous prize contest and the winner could receive a token like a 3-month advantage or something. It wouldn't be the same as getting to participate in the H2H, but it would offer something to those who signed up but were not chosen for brackets.

Maybe all this would be too complex to set up; I don't know. But there's my suggestion (not counting someone hosting another mini-H2H) IF the sign-up fails to reach the 128 mark again. Any thoughts? Would anyone accept being a "maybe" participant in the H2H and not knowing until the first round opened for voting?

Is there some reason just ANY 'even' number of contestants wont work?
