Ran across this today...

You can download hundreds of similar photographic images of a similar place or building
from the web and then have Photosynth technology build it into a 3d model.

If someone wants to dig up two or three days back in chat--I linked to that--
actually--linked to the pre beta release, you can dowload it, which it looks like this guy did...
it's a microsoft project.
It's somewhat interesting, but they are still just 2d stills accessed in a 3d environment.
this is definately a project that will never reach completion and IMHO ...outdated before it even got started.

And I totally disagree with you on completion and being outdated. This is a great technology that can benefit museums, archeology, etc. I think you misunderstand the implications and usage of the software.
