It seems like every episode they either go back in time to earth, or go to an alternate earth that is exactly like earth at a different time in history.
Yer talking about The Original Series (TOS) mostly, yep they did that a lot back then due to the budget... yer siblings are probably tuning into Star Trek Remastered, which is a remastering of the Original Series...
The latter Series and movies didn't do this that much, though there was the occasional ep (and movie) where the crew ends up back in time...

For all Trekkies we'll have to celebrate on September 8 (the Original Series debuted in 1966.) I guess there was a similar grandiose celebration for the show's 40th anniversary last year.

Indeed, there's Star Trek: Remastered currently underway and Star Trek: XI is coming out next year, December 25th 2008.

Not a strange new tactic, just a bit overdone, it appears to be a scene from Nemesis, the 10th film starring the Next Gen. crew.
Apparently the scene involves the bridge opening up from some explosion/crash or whatnot creating decompression... a little over the top, plus it takes a good several seconds before the emergency forcefields are put into action... (You'd expect such a vital system to kick in right away, unless power is THAT low, or offline or whatever...)
All in all, regardless of credibility of the scene, it was all in the insistence of director Stuart Baird, apparently similar decompression scenes (from aircraft I suppose) we're part of some of his previous films...

Well it's pretty average...
Came out in 2002, had a pretty average director (Stuart Baird knew nothing, if very little about ST)
Had a reasonable budget (around $50 mil to 70 mil) but a ridiculous ($30 mil was spent by Paramount on near to non existent advertising and such)
Plus it came at a time when the Next Gen was deteriorating somewhat.
Oh and above all, most of the good characterization scenes were cut out, in favor for most of the needless action...
All in all, an above average film, though it could have been much better.

Hey, at least they didn't lose HIS remains, they launched it and sent it to space as planned, then they launch Doohan's (Scotty's) remains some 16 or so years later... and they lose track of the vile for like a month or so... not to mention the delays in launching his and some odd 200 or so dead peep's remains...
