This is way off topic, but I don't know where else to go...

I am hoping some of you web gurus out there might be able to point me in the right direction.

I am creating an SQL database of which I am to query from a web site. I want to get an output like the one below. I want to get the database to post all data at page load, then either be able to search the database and/or use the drop down boxes to specify what I am looking for in the database.

What I am hoping you guys might be able to help me out with is, What should I use to get the desired web site with the least amount of VB, C#, ect... I have worked with HTML mostly but don't know if I can handle SQL Databases with HTML. I also tried to work with ASP.NET Web Matrix, with horrible results and too many VB compilation errors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

-Brandan

Have you tried creating a datagrid and binding your datasource to that grid?

Working with a datagrid

I am a .Net developer, so if you need further help. You can PM me.

If DB structure is not to complicated you may do this pretty well with pure ASP or PHP.
You need admin access to database, FTP access to server, and a backend programmed. Not so simple to resolve over a forum. Maybe if you specify a problem a bit more? What you have and what you don't have at the moment?

I'm willing to help if you can handle the rest.

Thanks Azionite for that web link. That'll help for most of what I need.

Hal, I messed up the original so much I couldn't see straight and trashed it.

I was hoping there would be an easier way of doing it. I am going to jump back on the horse and try ASP again. Maybe I am trying this all in one big step and should slow down and get one thing done at a time.

Thanks for your help, I'll probably be back once I get stuck.

I code ASP all the time. Doing it now as a matter of fact (online camping reservation system). I can probably help.

What development environment are you using (Dreamweaver, Notepad, FrontPage, etc)?

I'm using ASP.NET Web Matrix. Would using Dreamweaver or FrontPage be better?

If you're using ASP.Net then you might as well use Visual Studio.

For straight ASP (not ASP.Net) I really like Dreamweaver. If you ever use FrontPage I'll be forced to punch you in the throat through the Internet.

FrontPage is to web development what Muzak is to music. Evil or Very Mad

i would go with PHP&mysql, set up an apache server for local development. It's easy and all free.

'Course that means you need to learn PHP but I'd say it's definitely worth it! Very Happy

Punch me in the throat through the internet... thats a new one for me. mind if I use that on the little kids that play Halo? haha

anyways, I was an idiot and used what I guess is the old visual studio. I upgraded to Visual Studio 2005, so far it is much better!

I'll have to look into the php/mysql. I think I tried a couple years ago but gave up for some reason or another.

Many people know from their own experience that it's not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start.

Well, I appreciate what everyone has contributed. I am going to have to stick with ASP/ Visual Studio. Not needing to learn PHP is a big plus right now... learning too much of everything else is wearing me out. Argh

Thanks everyone. Very Happy
