Exactly.

My opinion, layer masks are ESSENTIAL!!!
And I challenge one person to give me a GOOD AND VALID reason why they're not...

(Because that would save me a lot of ime if I didn't have to use 'em)

Smile

If you are not using layer masks then you are missing out on a world of creative thought, flexibility, and percision. Download some layered files and see how they are used.

The fact that some PS users actually say that they cant find a reason for using masks really boggles my mind.

IMHO, it is THE most important "tool" to learn and is one of the easiest ones TO learn.

I can see doing without the pen tool, though once you learn how to use it, you realize its great, but no masking?! EVER?

I don't think I've created a single image that DIDN'T have a layer mask used somewhere in it.

Its like saying you dont see the point of breathing... I'm honestly shocked.

Wow. Shocked

I think to understand how layer masks are helpful, a chopper needs to really try it... for real, not just once or twice.

I'm using layer masks on maybe 80% of my layers on any kind of work. It's for sure one of the most important tool...
And what about adjustment layers... there's automatically layer masks on adjustment layers... it's not there just for fun!! Because for most of the adjustments you can do, you need to select only some parts of the picture. ReyRey talked about flexibility... THAT'S IT!! Smile

FYI: If you want to see some (to me) STUNNING layer mask work, and AUTOMATIC at that, check out the new PhotoMerg function in CS3... Merge a few pics together and then check out the resulting layers.

Turn the mask layers (those will be the layers that don't look like something most of you would want to mess with) on and off to see what they are doing. You'll find that they are doing some pretty amazing masking... and you'll get an idea of what the Power Of The Mask can do for you.

(again, this is just a wee example of what masks can achieve)

I wholeheartedly agree - The Mask was great and, as ReyRey said, had great flexibility.
Son of the Mask not quite so.
