This tribal fusion is getting more than annoying. Can we please get rid of it. I can see where it lives in the source code and I'd remove it so gladly and reload the homepage backup if I COULD.

The problem is that this site is slowing down badly due to that pop-up and on clicking a couple of entries to vote the page listed error instead of loading because the pop-up blocker was trying to remove that garbage .
Also is that HP ad that keeps on popping up. I personally now hate Hewlit Packard with all my heart and due to this constant and daily bit of annoyance would NEVER buy another thing from this company.

Can't we do something about this? Please. (and thank you)

Firefox. Add the adblockplus extension and you're good to go.

Yeah, the tribalfusion seriously needs to be gone.

well I should NOT have to add more software onto my pc to fix this problem. I have Opera and IE on my pc and on the mac I have firefox but seriously every guest that views this site is supposed to have FIrefox?
I appreciate the advice but I don't think that this is the ultimate answer. I have this idea we are stuck with this due to a contractual sponsorship and ugh that's just a sad sponsor.

I don't get this popup, but I never have. I do, however, see the SAME adds that I saw before I went advantage. So I have to ask... WhatDaFxup?

Seems i get the tribalfusion popup when i click on the day's winning image or the top voted chop in the daily.

I agree, it's sort of annoying. But my teenage daughter has that beat all to hell and back. I can adjust my p/o meter.

Such an excellent point. I personally use Firefox for 99.99% of my browsing and I recommend it to all my clients. BUT it is a tenet of web developers to NOT require visitors to use a specific browser for the "optimal experience".

I can't understand why advertisers still use the pop-up paradigm. If I'm not mistaken just about every recent version of the major browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari) have built-in pop-up blocking. There's a huge market for pop-up blocking software. So unless the advertisers are secretly making (and therefore selling) that software then this is the dumbest method of advertising.

Oh, and manic, you can only see part of the page code. There's a LOT of backend PHP code that you don't see that's building the end pages that you're looking at. That could be where the slow-downs are being generated. Tony (grefix) would be a better person to verify that as I'm only just getting to where I understand the code since I'm an ASP developer not a PHP developer. Kind of an apples and oranges thing to a small degree.

If manic is talking about the "view source" button, then you're right. All in all there are probably over 15-20 separate pages that go into the home page, and other pages, if not more.

The tribal backend is just a 3.5 kb file called j.js
that says
document.write('<center><a target=_blank href="http://a.tribalfusion.com/h.click/aKmx721EQy5Efc5Ej1mqMCYFbbTdZbVoAULpsQnmH3F5TQh5tet3mbGnFbHYsbWXVv10GjnmqJ23b32VUnEUAY4REvQQVZbsStJr1dFpWPQO3sYY0UUATAqu46UaQmjH4TQElc5iR8/http://www.adoptuskids.org"><img src="http://cdn5.tribalfusion.com/media/925866.gif" border=0 height=600 width=160 ><\/a><\/center>');

and shows up the contest pages.

if you don't want to switch browsers, just edit your 'hosts' file.

127.0.0.1 tribalfusion.com
127.0.0.1 a.tribalfusion.com
127.0.0.1 (whatever other 'offenders' you find on PSC)

Google 'hosts' for detailed explanation

Windows automatically looks for the existence of a HOSTS file and if found, checks the HOSTS file first for entries to the web page you just requested. The 127.0.0.1 is the location of your computer, so when the entry (example) "ad.doubleclick.net" is requested your computer thinks 127.0.0.1 is the location of the file. When this file is not located it skips onto the next file and thus the ad server is blocked from loading the banner, Cookie, or some unscrupulous ActiveX, or javascript file.

that's it Scion that small piece of code in the html source....

Post Fri Oct 26, 2007 7:36 pm   Reply with quote

I tried out Opera on this site and the pop-ups disappear but and yes there is a BIG but... it is reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllly slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I have done extra maintaince on my pc, dumping files, defragging, running lavasoft and dumping cookies, and cache and it's still slow.

In fact one of Shaman's pages woud not even open up. I voted and it sat there for 10 years with a big white page.

Is something going on with this site? Some backend work?
And about that pop-up ARE WE NOT ABLE TO YANK IT OUT OF THE SOURCE?????????????

Seems we can lock up threads and stuff but that one bit of code will live on into eternity. Please please please? And whatever is dragging this site down into slow mode? Thank you for continuing to read my rants.. I figure eventually I will wear you down. Very Happy

AD BLOCK PLUS AND FIREFOX as said previously Smile

Post Fri Oct 26, 2007 7:53 pm   Reply with quote

I know Micose but think about all the other visitors that land on here. They are all using a mix of browsers. I probably should just stick to the mac when i visit the site but not everybody has a 2 platform option.

If not for just the regular users but as Tofu says for the entire web audience that might come visit us we really should fix our site. That's a nicer option than me having a 3rd browser on the PC and for all those other people that might come see us.

I use Opera cause it's one of the best browsers for support of CSS and standards. I am stuck with IE because my husband is quite attached to his EBAY which is connected to the MSN/IE browser paypal/user name. He'd kill me if I axed his IE. So just adding another browser here is insanity.

I was not understanding Vokaris's advice on host files. not sure what host file is? But Lavasoft is a ADAware
