Getting your foot in the door of a publishing co. is a step in the right direction. I freelanced for one. When a position opened up, they offered it to me.

Check your public library for this book: 2008 Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market. I haven't looked at it, but I have used the Writer's Market books in the past. They contain information on payment rates, contracts, publication rights, etc. Writer's Market used to contain guidelines for illustrators for some books and serials. You may want to glance at a recent copy of that, as well. Can't hurt to look. Might be a good starting place for you.

Good luck.

Mate have done a few books now, one for recipes and a few local poets and kids books. All I did was make up some flyers and spread the word thru friends and those notice boards at shopping centres work real well, the only thing I would suggest is get a separate phone number for the work side of things. got a teenager daughter and the home phone can get rather busy.

One other thing I did was send a portfolio to the local film and camera shops with the sort of work I can do, that paid off big time, Im doing a lot of restore and colour work but its fun and the monies good.

Hope that helps mate.
