Don't convert your image to a .gif, it really seems to have hurt the quality of your image. Also, don't you think your edit was a little too subtle, I mean, I bet many people won't even be able to find what you changed...

Actually, when dealing with such low quality starting image with very little color definition, it's quite ok to convert to gif, provided you allow enough color pallet to display the image correctly. In this case, I used a combination of black and white.
