hey Ammo, mostly actually painted and dried with various media and object to apply it to good quality artist paper, then scanned in at high res and worked on in PS to the way I want it. You can also use textures like rust of wood etc and select parts...

...but I prefer if I have the time to do my first method, you have much greater control of getting the effect you want if you do them yourself.
