Using the cut through the face gives it more character, plus the vertical orientation with the face at the top gives off a correlation with a vertically-oriented human body.

wouldn't the cut still be down the middle if it was horizontal? and if the author had left the image horizontal wouldm't the face still be cut through? wouldn't a horizontal orientation have simply been a correlation with a horizontally oriented human bod
