You have to check the pic resolution, standard web resolution should be 72 pixel/inch, anything higher then that will result in larger file size :)

Make sure largest dimension is 550 pixels. Then, when you save, go to "save for web". Pick " jpeg Medium" from preset window. Then hit save. Then under format, choose images only. You should get a nice clean large image.
