Which is why I usually turn off my monitor (specifically the CRT in my Linux box) whenever I'm not using it or when I'm leaving it on overnight...

you know come to think of it when i turn my computer off and the screen goes black it also uses a great deal less electricity. not real productive but man that power bill sure nuff fall right off the bottom of the paper its printed on...... before someone responds with the (no stupid) remark. i realize he may be refering to the screen color to which i have to say...errrrey bodey kno a black screen got mo soul

stating the obvierse,
white screen = big light bulb ON behind the CRT screen
black screen = big light bulb OFF behind the CRT screen

The extra power use comes from the extra pixels being lit up. Each pixel is an RGB combo. Light them all up to maximum and you have white. Have them all turned off and you have black.

This is like your house. Turn all the lights on in the house and it uses more electricity then if you have them all off.
