Did my best with the gradient shadow. (Thanks Reinman) and made the ball shinier. Couldn't figure out how to undo the texture, but I think It looks much better now in general. Thanks a lot!

Here's my attempt.

Started with a blank canvas, made a circle selection on a separate layer, filled with a radial gradient, made selections for the holes, did a 180 degree transform, messed around with curves, created shadow.

It's not the best, hope it helps.

There were many great entries in that contest. I can't believe yours didn't get more votes. You got beat out by some joker with oysters. What was his name? ... er, never mind.

Both great images, but these bowling balls are just outstanding.

I dont think the texture on the ball is helping with your image, its too flat.

Sorry about the brief hijacking of the thread. It's just that seeing the mooseman's balls was traumatizing to me.

ANYWAYyyyyy to get a glossy look you need to have white gradients over the ball too. That's what Rey's trying to get you to realize in his post. I think he was trying to get you to think it through as it would benefit you more than simply telling you. But I get the feeling you're like me and haven't gotten used to pulling out the details that aren't blatantly obvious.

I'd suggest looking at a tut on how to do a "glass button" (or web 2.0 glossy badge) and then figure out how to alter the steps to work for a ball. Smile

The shinier the surface the lesser the shadow (and you get an increase in reflection intensity of course)
