...should it go blue after I've read it, or does it just stay red forever?

If you read the news/comments it turns in to blue again.

Like tesore said, latest news item should be read (the one where you see the comments)

But you have to read every word. It knows if you have.

I keep checking the obituaries to see if my name is there. If it's not, then I figure I'm ok.

Don't encourage him Neil, it won't last.
Claf's went up, and down {pun} all in the same day. It was all a tease. ReyRey is just trying to repeat the tease and arouse us like Claf did, and then take it all away. It won't last, you'll see.

What if you're colorblind...Just saying
Now...if only we had a indicator, to tell us when the news indicator, is indicating. That would be sweet.

This is why Synthvet and I would get along IRL...along with the avatar.

The highlighting of the news thing is cool,
BUT
It is a bit too pushy to insist that people actually click on each individual article. It is enough that we click the RED NEWS link and read the headers. I tend not to read the stories individually if they don't concern me, and the "RED" staying always on
is MAJORLY FRACKING annoying.
Oh hey, far be it from me to point out that this site already had a format for gaining attention to specific notices
right on the front page"
"My Active Entries
You have no entries posted in active contests.
New Votes and Comments
You have no new votes or comments.
News
You have one new article posted in NEWS "
I'm sure it would have killed someone to avoid the red glare and place the notifications in the notifications area that already exist.
There's a point where you make things look TOO amateur.
If you pay attention to the internets at all, that's how you drive new users away.

I'm with Scion on this - i don't want to HAVE to read it to make it go away. Once I've clicked it and taken a peek at what's up, I'd like to it reset back to good ol' basic blue.
And I might be missing something here. I just noticed that it is back to blue now. Though I just made a similar comment on that NEWS thread...
If I just look at the news listing without doing anything it seems to stay red. I'm hoping I dont' have to comment on every little bit of news just to make the HIDEOUS RED LETTERS go away?
