Usually the small mistakes in work (if they are not obvious) gives that work special appearance that is unique in some way.
I prefer handmade work. Maybe is not perfect but it have soul. I don't like photography on the wall, but nice painting instead.

Just a matter of opinion.
You are right of course, its more than just light and shadow. But if the great unwashed, (public), really cared about good design and talent and getting it done right, they would hire talent, not expect their secretaries, (or teen age nephew who could do it for free before he leaves for college next Fall), to do these things for them. And this opens another great big door for cheapskates everywhere.
Sorry, I know I am venting, but I think you are underestimating the effect this could have if it is really true. (Yes, of course I know it MUST be true, we saw it on the internet)
