Here is my two cents on this gif matter. If it matters at all.

Creating a gif does require talent, and this site has seen some wonder gifs. I actually have a couple of them in my favorites.

However, unless you have a WOW static image, especially in a blind contest. You do not have a chance in getting the votes if you are up against a gif.

Take today's contest for example. There are some really nice entries, but most likely the one gif in the contest will most likely take the prize. It already has over 80 views compared to the average 50 views for the other entries.

I might not know how to create gifs as well as some, but it is sort of discouraging to enter in contests that have gifs also.

My thoughts, have a separate section for gif only contests.

^ Makes some valid points.

Meh, I think you're wrong Jim. I didn't care for that gif entry. There were two other static entries that got my attention and my vote.
As someone who actually makes gifs... It has to do more than just move go make me vote for it. Remember I was on the "I hate .gifs in contests" when I first started here as well. Just ask Tofu.

As for views... If they're anything like me... I check my own image all the time, driving up the view totals... Even before the contest. Checking it for how it looks on different monitors... With gifs, I like to check the frame rates and adjust multiple times till I get it right... A few contests open with me already having 10-20 views... Personally, I wish there was a way the Penguin could code personal views out of your total views.

If it were up to me I would totally ditch that view count (it's irrelevant anyway).

I'll gladly sell the domain name, if it were implemented, but if it's out of the question I would like to develop a site for it. Any volunteers?

Everyone here is trying to separate gif from static images.

I love giffies.....but i'd like............

To make a gif you need talent , but i should make a separate contest.

In anon contests a gif goes better than a static.......

Woooooooooooow Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

My idea is always the same. Photoshop contest is based on adobe Photoshop software. All you can do with it should be in contest.
So let the gifs were they are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or begin to make some of them, maybe you'll love them!

are u speaking about that kinda GIFs ? http://photoshopcontest.com/view-entry/183590/boomerang-effect-gif.html?nocache=1
so maybe i would agree with u...and no.. apparently this is just a matter of quality. this is an example of a not ecperience work that won. keep it up ! etc... encouragements... in this case. But i would desagree about a equallay technically "bad" jpeg...always no good to see in front page right ?

The trouble with that is Photoshop is not just photo editing software any more. Cs6 has video editing so should we now be allowed to enter videos in contests. pfft!

Gifs and still images are two totally different monsters and deserve to have their own contests. I've entered and won with both and people saying Gifs are harder to make are talking bollocks. I personally believe it takes a lot more talent to tell a story with a single image than it does with an animation.

I created that gif on Saturday afternoon after the contest had opened. It took me approx 45-50 mins to create. That red background was a personal nod to shaw brothers' movies. Stripped down and just downright simple. Some of you may know what I'm talking about.

I made that gif to please myself and had no idea that it would do well; nevermind win the contest. Anyway, If I knew that, I woulda put further effort into creating a better environment for the trinket. With all the bells and whistles included.

I try not to take myself too seriously. I just submit stuff and learn from my mistakes. That's all.

Everything is subjective. Life is subjective. Deal with it, please.

Agreed. Much harder to make a static image and win. Need a lot more X-factor to sell a story in one frame as opposed to 10-20.
This is one of my favs and it came in second...

This one came in first and is my all time vote getter
http://photoshopcontest.com/view-entry/107122/gondork.html

Yet I can crank out a decent gif in under a half hour.
I don't have to worry so much about details even though I do try to take heed of shadows and the like...

This was for a speed chop competition the end when the squirrel hits the wall was the original picture.

Most times I at least try to make my gifs look good as a static image first.
I also like looping effects so that it doesn't just abruptly stop and start.
Doesn't always happen.
One of my favorites with some help from Granulated.

This wasn't even near the top. Came in 7th that day.

another one

I'd be all for:
A) restricting contests to just static images like they do with H2H
B) giving special days for .gif contests
C) Dealing with the fact that gifs are allowed therefore STFAC
