Incidentally, many sites offer gift subscription services. It usually comes from folk saying "I really enjoy these perks/features/etc and I'd like to give a subscription to someone else." I know of 2 sites where the subscription service started because of member requests.

I know one site where a paying subscriber can gift 3 x 1 month subscriptions for free to perhaps whet someones interest. It's a feature that has gone over very well. But that site is well established and can afford to hand out free subscriptions. Maybe PSC site could adopt that some day - then maybe you would feel better about the practice overall.
