can i post images without entering a contest?
if so, how?

The whole idea of this site is to post in the contests. You can use image tags etc. to put images into your messages/thread posts, but I think you should concentrate on posting a few contest images first... you'll be amazed at how much fun you'll have (if you don't worry about your vote count!).

I've checked your stuff on DeviantArTs Thang - you should have lots of fun here. The neat thing is that you are GIVEN a starting picture each day and you can DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH IT.
