Haha! At first I thought this was about that often overused (and misused!) word in the American vocab: "Awesome!" - often used to mean "fantastic, great, wonderful, excellent" etc, when it really means as above - "inspiring respect, dread, and wonder".

Hence, something like Hurricane Katrina can accurately be said to have been "awesome", though not of course "Awesome!"
