hey... my friend stephen fox (billtvshow) told me to join...
i only started using ps a little while ago so please excuse me.. i hope to get much better

Matt, I think you'll find this a good place to learn and develop in PS. I started here, not even using PS, and when I switched over to PS, there were users here who were more than willing to help me learn it. You can also learn a lot just by looking at the entries that do well here and try to figure out how they did what they did and notice the elements that make that image standout, such as clean edges, good shadows, etc.

... but I have a dirty little secret: I often use Corel Photo Paint... I also have CS2... but are you guys gonna flip out on that statement?

like VVP said, DON'T wait! Even if all you concentrate on is getting your first 10 chops in so that you can vote it's worth it.
Also I cannot recommend and Advantage subscription enough to anybody. Even if you only get it for a month it's worth it. You'll have up to an extra week's worth of time to research how to do effects that you want to achieve. Then, when you rock at chopping, you can make do with the same day notice like btvs, marco, anfa, square, etc., etc., etc. (but not me). 
Now that being said, if your sig graphic is any indication you're gonna shine here.
