Laredo, I prefer your first background, simply because it seems to represent more depth within the overall image. I.e. the image looks more dramatic. But that's just my opinion :)

I go for this background, but I think you did a good job on both entries. The other one is a bit too saturated. The trees in front are looking cloned. But it has depth, this one doesn't.

I like his the best between the two. Maybe the lack of references for depth, but the difference in the focus makes up for it. good job. I hope you win this one.
