OK.. here is a NON gif that has only a couple frames. I didn't cheat and just squash and stretch to make it bounce. All the individual parts (for the most part) work together at hinge points as I imagine they would in reality.

valiant effort at illustrating spring dynamics,however there is one major flaw which is quite difficult to chop...as springs stretch,more than thinning out,the space should open up between the individual coils

spring action is hard to gif since to do it properly you would have to go it one coil at a time,I tried it here but as you can see it´s not to convincing : photoshopcontest.com...

A spring definitly gets thinner or thicker depending if its stretched or compressed. But mine is just a bit exagerated. Your right.. too much work to gif proper spring action with little to no payoff. No viewer would be the wiser if done properly.
