I hear what you're saying ledirlo and you are correct if trying to make transparent glass (which I may yet do with this experimenting).

But I didn't want totally clear glass. I wanted a streaky looking glass laced with blacks and greys (see the examples I linked to). Rey is correct in his assessment of what I'm trying to accomplish. It's one of those "I can see it in my head" deals. If I can ever find a good example of what I'm trying to do then I'll be sure to post it.

Cool

Tofu,
here's not an attempt to correct your pic but give you another point of view:the dark part of your glass was inverted to white and blurred, th result is awfull, quick job just to show you what I meant.

Sweet! I like your take on it. Very Happy

I guess the terms for what I'm trying to create are "venetian glass", "mottled glass", "colored glass", "murano glass" or "speckled glass". Rough examples:

Have you considered the obvious alternative of maybe using 3D software?

Even if it's not a 100% physically correct render, it will get you much closer to the desired effect, then polish it in Photoshop.

Well I could look into a rendering package. But this whole thing started as a way of learning more on using shapes, gradients, masks, etc. within Photoshop. As well as learning how to analyze an image for composition and positioning of light sources.

I won't be playing with any 3D software until I have a better computer. Smile

Love the blue glass look. Nice shade and the bottom looks good too.

By the way, don't get confused with the apple and the upside down image within it. That happens with a "solid" glass object., like a marble. Wink

You are exactly right, the image I pulled off the web does not work as a good example in this scenario. I was just pointing out the availability of other tools (some of them free) to get the job done, or get to a good starting/reference point if nothing else.
